Habitat pour l’Humanité Québec et la Fondation MONTONI lancent la construction de 6 unités résidentielles pour des familles à Lachine
Montréal, le 9 novembre 2023 – Habitat pour l’humanité Québec (HHQ) et la Fondation MONTONI lancent la construction de six unités résidentielles afin de permettre à des familles du Grand Montréal de devenir propriétaires. Pour les deux organismes, dans le contexte actuel de pénurie de logements abordables, cet immeuble est un pas dans la bonne direction, qui fera toute la différence pour ces six familles qui vivent dans des conditions de logement précaires. L’immeuble situé à Lachine accueillera ses premiers occupants à l’été 2024.
Bien plus qu’un logement
La mission d’HHQ va bien au-delà de la construction de logements. Elle permet à des familles d’accéder à la propriété, et ce, sans mise de fonds, avec une hypothèque auprès de l’organisme même – à 70 % sans intérêt – et dont les mensualités ne dépassent pas 30 % du revenu brut du ménage. L’OBNL fournit également un accompagnement auprès des familles afin de les aider dans la prise en charge de leurs nouvelles responsabilités.
Nous travaillons depuis 1998 à permettre à un plus grand nombre de familles québécoises de se constituer un capital pour elles-mêmes et leurs enfants et de connaître la sécurité et l'autonomie que procure la propriété », explique Shirlane Day, directrice générale d’Habitat pour l’humanité Québec.
Un soutien qui fait la différence
Ce nouveau projet voit le jour grâce à un soutien financier de 300 000 $ de la Fondation MONTONI, ainsi qu'à l'engagement du Groupe Montoni, qui réalise le projet à prix coutant. De plus, grâce au soutien de ses partenaires et fournisseurs, le Groupe Montoni s’est engagé à mobiliser 300 000 $ supplémentaires pour sa réalisation. L’équipe d’Habitat pour l’humanité Québec compte également sur un financement de la Société canadienne d’hypothèque et de logement (SCHL) à hauteur de 400 000 $ grâce à un partenariat national avec Habitat pour l’humanité Canada.
« Les partenariats avec des organisations comme Habitat pour l’humanité sont essentiels pour que le gouvernement du Canada veille à ce que tout le monde au pays ait un chez-soi sûr », a déclaré l’honorable Sean Fraser, ministre du Logement, de l’Infrastructure et des Collectivités. « Aujourd’hui, nous célébrons la création d’un magnifique nouvel ensemble résidentiel qui permettra d’héberger six familles dans la collectivité en croissance de Lachine. Cet ensemble leur donnera non seulement la possibilité de posséder un logement abordable, mais aussi la tranquillité d’esprit de savoir qu’elles ont un endroit sûr où revenir à la maison tous les soirs. Je suis fier de voir que la Stratégie nationale sur le logement change la donne dans la vie des gens au Canada grâce à des exemples comme celui-ci. »
En mars 2023, le gouvernement du Canada et Habitat pour l’humanité Canada ont annoncé un investissement supplémentaire de 25 millions de dollars pour construire 500 logements abordables partout au pays au cours des trois prochaines années. Cette somme porte à 80,8 millions de dollars l’investissement fédéral total dans Habitat pour l’humanité par l’entremise du Fonds national de co-investissement pour le logement du gouvernement du Canada.

Des impacts concrets
Vivre dans un logement sain, décent et sécuritaire entraîne des bénéfices tangibles. Les résultats observés chez les familles soutenues par Habitat pour l'Humanité Québec après leur emménagement dans leur nouvelle demeure sont les suivants :
- 86 % déclarent éprouver un bonheur accru ;
- 70 % signalent une amélioration de leur état de santé ;
- 65 % constatent une augmentation de la confiance de leurs enfants en eux-mêmes ;
- 58 % témoignent d'une amélioration de leur situation financière ;
- 65 % évoquent un impact positif sur la réussite scolaire de leurs enfants.
Plus de 16 nouvelles familles d’ici 2026
Dans son plus récent rapport, la SCHL estime que près de 620 000 logements additionnels seront nécessaires d’ici 2030 afin de rétablir l’abordabilité du logement dans la province de Québec. Dans ce contexte, HHQ estime qu’il est nécessaire que l’ensemble des acteurs du milieu multiplient les solutions dans un effort concerté afin de permettre au plus grand nombre de familles vivant dans la précarité d'aspirer à une vie meilleure.
Cette construction s’inscrit dans le cadre de la nouvelle campagne majeure d’Habitat pour l’humanité Québec, Bâtir pour demain, dont la première phase vise à récolter 2,5 M$. Habitat for Humanity Québec et the MONTONI Foundation launch the construction of 6 residential units for families in Lachine
November 9, 2023 - Habitat for Humanity Quebec (HHQ) and the MONTONI Foundation are launching the construction of six residential units to enable families in Greater Montreal to become homeowners. For both organizations, in the current context of a shortage of affordable housing, this building is a step in the right direction, which will make all the difference for these six families living in precarious housing conditions. The building, located at 29, 7th Avenue in Lachine, will welcome its first occupants in the spring of 2024.
More than just housing
HHQ's mission goes far beyond building housing. It gives families access to home ownership, with no down payment, a mortgage with the organization itself - 70% interest-free - and monthly payments of no more than 30% of gross household income. The NPO also provides support for families as they take on their new responsibilities.
Since 1998, we've been working to enable more Quebec families to build capital for themselves and their children, and to experience the security and autonomy of home ownership," explains Shirlane Day, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Quebec.
Support that makes a difference
This new project is being made possible thanks to $300,000 in financial support from the Montoni Foundation, and the commitment of Groupe Montoni, which is carrying out the project at a reduced cost. In addition, thanks to the support of its partners and suppliers, Groupe Montoni was able to raise a further $300,000 for the project.
Since 2019, the Government of Canada has made a total funding commitment of $713,000 towards Habitat Quebec projects, including these homes in Montreal. This funding commitment from the National Housing Co-Investment Fund includes a Black Families Funding investment of $236,700.
“Partnerships with organizations like Habitat for Humanity are key for the government of Canada to ensure every Canadian has a safe place to call home,” said the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “Today, we are celebrating the creation of a beautiful new project that will house six families in the growing community of Lachine. This will not only provide them with the opportunity to own affordable homes, but will also give them peace of mind, knowing they have secure roofs over their heads and a safe place to come home to each night. I am proud to see the National Housing Strategy making a difference in the lives of Canadians through examples such as this.”
In March 2023, the Government of Canada and Habitat for Humanity Canada announced an additional $25 million investment to build 500 new affordable homes across Canada over the next three years. This brings the total federal investment in Habitat for Humanity to $80.8 million through the Government of Canada’s National Housing Co-Investment Fund.

Living in a healthy, decent and safe home brings tangible benefits. The results observed among families supported by Habitat pour l'Humanité Québec after moving into their new homes are as follows:
- 86% report increased happiness;
- 70% report improved health;
- 65% report an increase in their children's self-confidence;
- 58% report an improvement in their financial situation;
- 65% report a positive impact on their children's academic success.
More than 16 new families by 2026
n its most recent report, CMHC estimates that nearly 620,000 additional housing units will be needed by 2030 to restore housing affordability in the province of Quebec. Against this backdrop, HHQ believes that it is essential for all players in the community to multiply their solutions in a concerted effort to enable as many families living in precarious conditions as possible to aspire to a better life.
This construction is part of Habitat for Humanity Quebec's major new campaign, Building for Tomorrow, the first phase of which aims to raise $2.5 million to support the Lachine project and the relaunch of their mission through the support provided by their teams to partner families, improving their supervision of the volunteers who make their intervention model so successful.
